Who is the box office king? Badshah Shahrukh Khan or Khiladi Akshay Kumar?

Who is the number 1 Bollywood star today? Though both Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar say that they dont believe in numbers...(even I don't)...numbers do count(no pun intended!). Shahrukh Khan has been the undisputed king of the box office for the last 15 years. With a brilliant career and some pathbreaking films like Dilwale Dulhaniya le Jayenge, Swades and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, he has made it known that he is the most versatile actor in Bollywood. Though cynics has stated that he is just good in romantic films or has a hamming style of acting, Shahrukh Khan has silenced his critics by coming with movies like Chak De India (2007) and Swades. SRK is a darling of the critics, he is a role model of most youngsters and heart-throb of scores of women. Shahrukh Khan makes for a great copy in interviews and is a media’s darling. Shahrukh’s wit, his energy and the sheer enigmatic presence can light up movies. Now, he has raised his sexuality quotient too by building a 6 pack body. The year 2007 began on a good note with Chak de and he is ‘reintroduced’ in Om Shanti Om. SRK has been the numero uno but will he sustain it from a magic called Akshay Kumar?

Akshay Kumar: Akshay Kumar, aka Rajiv Bhatia has proved to be the most versatile actor for the past 5 years. Though he has been around for quite some time, success has been slow and steady. Initially, he would experience spurts of success and then would go back to oblivion with flops. Though he was known for his ‘Khiladi’ image and had the tag of an action hero, he was supposed to get stardom with comedy films. Akshay experienced comedy with Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi and later found the vehicle to instant fame with Hera Pheri, a comic caper from Priyadarshan. After that there has been no looking back for Akshay Kumar. Khakee, Aitraaz, Awaara Paagal Deewana, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Garam Masala and many other movies proved that he was synonymous with box office success. Akshay Kumar is now the only actor with the maximum number of hits to his credit. This year has been rocking to Akshay Kumar who has given three of the biggest hits: Bhool Bulaiya, Heyy Babyy and Namaste London. Akshay Kumar was recently offered a flattering amount for Singhh is Kingg. The producer has remarked that Akshay Kumar deserves a lot more than he gets because he ‘guarantees’ a hit.

Verdict: Both Akshay Kumar and Shahrukh have their own sets of strengths and moreover they make a good combination on screen from what we saw in Heyy Babyy and probably in Om Shanti Om. Fans of Akshay Kumar has stated that unlike Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar has only worked with directors who were not successful and still delivered hits. To Shahrukh’s defence, we can say that Shahrukh has also worked with debutant directors or relatively new like Aditya Chopra, Karan Johan, Shimit Amin etc. He was a part of their first films or second films but was still able to create magic. Both Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar have made it big on their own steam and more so because they passionately love their craft. Best of luck to the both of them!
