Rang De Basanti’s name when the script was in the drafting stage was called ‘Aahuti’ In fact, the movie’ story was somewhat different from what was fleshed out eventually. In the story of Aahuti, the focus was more on how historical personalities (revolutionaries) shaped the character of our country.

But then the creative team felt something was amiss and did not quite connect to the present generation. So they changed the story to give the ‘present-day’ feel to it. The name of the movie was changed to Rang De Basanti, after they hit upon the idea of the present day college going students witnessing a change within themselves after playing the characters of revolutionary figures. RDB was also going to be released in an English version ‘Paint it Yellow.’ However the creative team dropped the idea later.
