Aamir Khan’s baby born through surrogate mother

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao are proud parents of a baby boy born on December 1, 2011. The baby was born through IVF to a surrogate mother at a private clinic in Mumbai. Aamir was the one who first gave away the news to Mid-day, famous Mumbai tabloid stating, 'It gives us the greatest joy to share with you the good news of the birth of our baby boy. This baby is especially dear to us because he was born to us after a long wait and some difficulty. Due to medical complications, we were advised to have a baby through IVF -Surrogacy and we feel very grateful to the Almighty that everything has gone well.'

Aamir has two other children Junair and Ira -- from his first wife, Reena Dutta. Aamir married Kiran Rao in December 2005 in Panchgani.

If sources are to be believed, Aamir Khan went for the surrogate mother option after Kiran Rao suffered a miscarriage. Aamir had actually blogged about the tragedy of miscarriage. "I have bad news folks...Kiran and I lost our baby...Despite our best efforts we were unable to avert a miscarriage...The last 2 months have been a struggle for us and that is one of the reasons I was absent from the blog in more ways than one...K and I need time to heal... I will be away for a while."

The most common reasons for surrogacy are the intended mother's previous hysterectomy, congenital uterine malformations and medical conditions making being pregnant too risky for the intended mother.

How is surrogacy done?

Basically, there are two types of surrogate pregnancies- traditional and gestational surrogacy. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is artificially inseminated from the intended father. The surrogate provides the egges and carries the pregnancy for the intended parents. The baby is genetically connected only to the intended parent and not the intended mother. The insemination is a simple, affordable procedure.

In gestational surrogacy, the intended mother provides the eggs, the intended father provides the sperm and an in vitro fertilization done to create embryos. The embryos are then transferred into the uterus of the surrogate. The baby born is genetically not related to the surrogate.

We wish both Aamir Khan and Kiran heartiest congratulations for the baby
