Vidya Balan's Kahaani and Dirty Picture Break Records

Vidya Balan has gone the way, no woman has gone before in Bollywood, both Dirty Picture and Kahaani have created box office records. While Dirty Picture (2011) is the biggest grossing woman-centric film in terms of volume of collections, Kahaani (2012) is actually te biggest hit of Vidya Balan in terms of profit margin and pricing.

Kahaani made in just Rs. 5 crore went on to earn Rs. 65 crore in five weeks, with a record of 90 percent in the second weekend and by the fifth weekend, earned more than Rs. 1 crore and has still stood powerful against recent hits like Housefull 2. Plus, there is a lot of money to be made from home video, satellite TV and music rights.

Vikram Malthora, COO of Viaco, 18 Motion says Tanu weds Manu’s success which was driven by a female actor (Kangana Ranaut) gave them the motivation to go for Kahaani. He says, “ Content has to be strong, well presented and marketed right. The gender of the protagonist is not an issue.” Director Sujoy Ghosh also supports his view, “ If you have a wiling producer to take the risk, you can be bold and brave as content and format goes. The story canbe driven by either the female or the male protagonist, content mattes above all. “
