Both the actors are in their 40s. While Salman Khan’s age is 46 (born December 27, 1946), Akshay Kumar is 44 years old (born September 9, 1967). But both defy their ages and are superfit looking in their mid-30s and as one person commented, Akshay Kumar can still pass for a college kid while Salman Khan is one of the most good-looking men in the world.

Both Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan are good friends of each other, they have debuted also nearly 25 years ago ! While Salman Khan was just 23 when he debuted in Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988), Akshay Kumar was 24 when he debuted in Saugandh (1991).

 Khiladi (1992) one of the best Bollywood thrillers proved to be Akshay Kumar’s first hit and also the most loved ‘Khiladi’ movie in the hit series that would follow. Though his career was marred by many flops and they had to do with similar cop-revenge stories, he did get his share of hits in the 90s in the form of Mohra (1994), Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) Yeh Dillagi (1994), Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), Khatron Ke Khiladi(1996) and Dil Toh Paagal Hai (1997).

Akshay Kumar changed gears and focussed on comedy. He was one of the first heroes among mainstream actors today to get into comedy after which the likes of Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan joined in. Hera Pheri (200) turned into a cult comedy superhit which he followed up with Dhadkanin the same year, which had him in an emotional role.

Akshay also tried his hands into experimentation and even bagged the best negative role Filmfare Award for Ajnaabee (2001) and then of a blindman in Aankhen (2002. But comedy proved to be Akshay Kumar’s forte and he was in 2000 and beyond 2010, what Govinda was in the 90s. So Akki started hitting it big with Awaara Paagal Deewana (2004), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2005) Garam Masala(2005) and Phirr Hera Pheri (2006).

The best year for Akshay Kumar so far, was 2007 when he even broke Shah Rukh Khan’s record in the amount of revenues generated. His superhit movies in the year was Bhool Bhulaiya, Namastey London, Heyy Babyy and Welcome. But his success vehicle derailed after 2008 and apart from Singh is Kinng in that year, flops after flops marred his caeer- Tashan (2008), 8 x 10 Tasveer (Akshay Kumar’s biggest flop, 2009), Kambhakkht Ishq (2009), Blue (2009), Action Replayy (2010), Tees Maar Khan (2010), Patiala House (2010), Thank You (2010, Average) and Desi Boyz (2011). In all these years, Akshay Kumar managed one above average movie Khatta Meetha(2010) and a hit Housefull (2010).

Flops or hits not withstanding, one thing that is noteworthy is that Akshay Kumar is effortless and phenonmenal as an actor and it is always a delight to see him acting, especially his comic timing is impeccable. 2012 may again seem to be one of the best years in Akshay Kumar’s career, he already had a superhit Housefull 2 and Rowdy Rathore is positioned to be a huge success too. Next up is Joker (Shirish Kunder movie) and Khiladi 786. He will also be doing Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2 in 2013.

 Salman Khan is one of the biggest superstars in India. He has the dubious distinctions of the maximum number of flops among mainstream actors but at the same time, he has the impeccable distinction of having the biggest mega blockbusters in Bollywood with movies doing business of more than Rs. 200 crores. At this point of time, Salman Khan is a super-hit machine and as good friend Aamir Khan says, Bollywood Number 1 actor.

Though Biwi Ho Toh Aisi did not do much, Salman Khan become every girl’s sweetheart as Maine Pyaar Kiya(1989) proved to be a trend-setter and one of the biggest superhit in India ever. Even now the movie remains an untouched classic.

In 1991, Salman Khan gave a fair number of hits in the form of Patthar Ke Phool( which had Raveena Tandon debuting), Love (a romantic movie opposite debutante Revathi), Sanam Bewafa (opposite debuntante Chandni), Kurbaan (opposite Ayesha Jhulka, her first movie) and a superhit in the form of the musical Saajan (opposite Madhuri Dixit).

But despite the above hits, Salman Khan had a large number of releases in the period 1990 and 1994 and most of them were flops. Check out the list of flops of Salman - Suryavanshi, Ek Ladka Ek Ladki, Jaagruti, Nischay (the movie which Karisma Kapoor shot for, first), Chandra Mukhi and Dil Tera Aashiq.
Salman Khan broke the jink and gave India one of its most loved movies and a mega blockbuster – Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994) opposite Madhuri Dixit. A movie that was also much delayed in making, Andaaz Apna Apna released in the same year and flopped. Today, we know it as a benchmark for comedy movies.
The spate of flops continued for Salman Khan till 1999.

Barring yet another blockbuster Karan Arjun(1995), his movies flopped right, left and center- Chaand Ka Tukdaa, Sangdil Sanam, Majhdaar, Dushman Duniya Ka, Auzaar. Sar Uttha Ke Jiyo. However, movies like Khamoshi-The Musical, Jeet, Judwaa, Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya and Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai, while not making much money still kept him afloat. His special appearancein Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) was well received.

Salman Khan actually proved himself as an actor in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and also scored a huge hit in 1999 with Biwi Number 1 .

The period between 2000 and 2009 was the worst for Salman Khan where he kept on giving flops after flops, though there were some big hits to balance things for him. The flops included Hello Brother, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Chal Mere Bhai, Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Tumk Na Bhool Payenge, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, Yeh Hai Jalwa, Garv – Pride and Honour, Lucky – No Time for Love, Kyon Ki, Jaan-E-Mann, Baabul, Salaam-e- ishq, Marigold, Hello, Heroes and Yuvraaj (phew, and there are some more which we have not included).

But at the same period between 2000 and 2009, Salman Khan scored a trendsetting big hit called Tere Naam (2003), his atrocious hairstyle actually become a fashion statement for many. He also starred in one of the biggests in that period – No Entry (2005) and also scored another hit in Partner (2007).

Salman Khan says that he began taking movies very seriously after Wanted (2009) became a blockbuster. He beame the king with a Midas touch after this film, everything he touched and did made gold for everyone. Salman Khan’s Dabangg (2010) had his signature persona written all over it and the cult movie became the second highest grosser in Indian movie history. Ready (2011) made business close to Rs. 200 crores while Bodyguard the biggest hit of the year, surpasssed the magical revenue figure.

Salman Khan’s next release is Ek Tha Tiger and from the rushes, director Kabir Khan has another winner in hand. The most awaited film Dabangg 2 releases in 2013.

Akshay Kumar vs Salman khan, who rules ?

 While both are devastatingly handsome, Akshay Kumar is known to be the go-to man for comedy movies while Salman Khan’s swagger and screen presence is enough to make his fans clap endlessly for him. Salman while temperamental, is known for his amazing sense of humor.

One more common factor in their lives is Katrina Kaif. While she is Salman Khan’s best friend and confidante, their on-screen presence hasn’t really created much impact.
